5 hot spots for cool comedy

Sep 21, 2016

One of the best places in Western New York to get a little comic relief is Helium, 30 Mississippi St., Buffalo. Helium books national acts; coming up soon are appearances by top comics such as comedian and author Jen Kirkman, Comedy Central Special star and actor Godfrey and touring comedian Gary Gulman.

Kirkman, author of the recently published book “I Know What I’m Doing & Other Lies I Tell Myself (Dispatches from a Life Under Construction),” stars in a currently streaming Netflix Original Comedy Special that was on everyone’s list of the top 10 stand-up specials.

Besides working on comedy stages throughout the world, Godfrey has starred in his own Comedy Central Special and appeared in “Zoolander,” “30 Rock” and “Louie.”

Gulman, a New York comedian who’s originally from Boston, has toured for two decades, starred in three TV specials and made three comedy albums.

Besides bringing in national talent, Helium hosts an open mic night every Tuesday for aspiring funny men and women. Enjoy dinner before the show at Elements restaurant in the Helium complex. You can even sign up for comedy classes to perfect your own joke-telling techniques.

Just across the border in Niagara Falls, Canada, Yuk Yuk’s comedy club is part of an entertainment complex that’s like an adult playground. The club presents shows every weekend starring top-notch comedians from the U.S. and Canada. Also in the complex is Casino Niagara, where you can enjoy gaming action from slot machines to poker. There are four restaurants to choose from, as well as a live entertainment venue. If you want to make it a weekend getaway, there are several hotels connected to the complex.

Rob’s Comedy Playhouse, 1340 N. Forest Road, Williamsville, was named one of the top 10 places to see live comedy in the U.S. by USA Today. Your host, comedian Rob Lederman, presents two stand-up and improve shows every Saturday night. You’ll see top stand-up performers like Vince Morris from HBO. Admission, $10 per show, is one of the best bargains in town.

Nietzsche’s, at 248 Allen St., lays claim to the longest running open mic night in Buffalo and also welcomes national touring acts. Besides comedy, you’ll hear great music here.

Broadway Joe’s Bar & Grille, 3051 Main St., best known as a sports bar, also hosts an open mic night every Monday where local comedians get a chance to shine.

Comedy clubs are among the many choices for active adults that are a part of Buffalo’s vibrant entertainment scene. Music, theater, professional sports, parks and waterfront activities—residents of Canterbury Woods Gates Circle will be within easy reach of them all!

After an evening out, residents of this unique continuing care retirement community will come home to luxurious apartment homes that offer security, comfort and great neighbors.

Now under construction near charming, historic Elmwood Village, Canterbury Woods Gates Circle is accepting applications for the priority wait list. To learn more, please call 716-929-5811 or contact us here.

Share the love in Buffalo’s most romantic places

In February our thoughts turn to romance. But why not celebrate love all year round, when there are so many romantic places around Buffalo? We are, of course, close to Niagara Falls—the honeymoon capital of the world. Niagara Falls has been the ultimate destination for romantic getaways since the early 1800s. That romantic spirit flows all the way to our town, where you can stroll along the riverfront to watch the sunset or wander hand in hand with your sweetie through beautiful Delaware Park. Tour the Elmwood Village neighborhood, with its cute coffee houses, smart boutiques, museums and galleries, and meander down streets lined with charming Queen Anne homes. Catch a play at the gorgeous Shea’s Performing Arts Center or a Buffalo Philharmonic concert at acoustically awesome Kleinhans Music Hall.
