Canterbury Woods Gates Circle is coming to life

Aug 11, 2017

“It’s a nice blend of contemporary and traditional architecture that really fits into the site,” says architect Michael Conroe of Architectural Resources. “We wanted the building to be appropriate for the neighborhood. We’re at the north end of Millionaire’s Row, and we needed to complement that neighborhood, but we wanted contemporary features as well.”

The six-story building sits on a limestone base, and the ground floor is elevated from the surrounding grade by about 3 feet. A brown brick and wood veneer and wood double-hung windows on the lower three floors reflect a more traditional style. Precast panels and bands provide decorative accents. A light grey terra cotta tile finish, casement windows and decorative metal panels on the upper floors add contemporary flair and contrast.

Two clerestory boxes set off the front of the building.

The lower box on the first floor is part of the great room, which looks out onto Chapin Parkway. A decorative, curved staircase leads from ground level to the great room terrace. A formal dining room, café with outdoor dining space and library are adjacent on the first floor. High ceilings lend grandeur to the public spaces on the first floor, and lots of large windows flood them with natural light.

One of the building’s most spectacular features is the double-height glass box on the top floor, which houses a cocktail lounge with a stunning view all the way down Chapin Parkway.

“I think people are really going to enjoy the space,” Conroe says.

The lowest, below-ground level houses approximately 51 parking spaces as well as building services. Two sets of stairs and a dual elevator bank access the lobby and upper floors.

“Every resident has weather-protected parking in the basement—something that’s very good in Buffalo,” Conroe says.

Visitors and staff enter through a glass vestibule on the south side of the building.

The elegant ground-floor apartments have patios enclosed by a guard rail that encircles the building. Most of the units on the fourth through sixth floors have two terraces, Conroe says.

Canterbury Woods Gates Circle’s residents will be thrilled by the building’s beauty every time they come home! They will enjoy stylish apartment homes, with numerous programs and activities, and a welcoming environment that is close to the heart of town, all with the reassurance of life care should their needs change. It’s the ultimate in retirement living for active people who want easy access to the world-class sports, museums, concerts and events that downtown Buffalo has to offer.

Canterbury Woods Gates Circle is scheduled to open this fall. To learn more about this unique and innovative retirement community, please call 716-929-5817 or find more information here.
