How To Choose the Right Senior Living Floor Plan for You

Aug 27, 2021

Picking a floor plan is one of the first decisions you’ll need to make after (or sometimes even before) choosing a senior living community. While you may be tempted to select the largest floor plan available, it’s important to take time and think about what you will actually need in your new living space.

“Most of us accumulate a large amount of stuff over our lifetimes, so the idea of downsizing can be a bit overwhelming,” says Lynda Marino, Marketing Director at Canterbury Woods Gates Circle. “However, when it comes to senior living floor plans, less can actually be more – more freedom, more enjoyment and more opportunity.”

Choosing a floor plan requires the Goldilocks approach: not too little, not too big – but just right. “Just right,” though, can look markedly different from one individual to the next. Lynda says that seniors should take a look at their wants and needs for their living space and use those factors to select a floor plan that works best for their desired lifestyle.

“It’s possible that you might want a small living space because you plan on spending the majority of your time in the larger, common areas of the community,” says Lynda. “Or, if you enjoy hosting parties or guests in your home, you might want to choose a plan that has two bedrooms and sitting areas instead of a smaller one-bedroom space. At Canterbury Woods Gates Circle, we offer 20 different floor plans ranging in size from 800 square feet all the way up to 2,000 square feet. This gives our residents the flexibility to enjoy the private lifestyle they want while still enjoying everything our community has to offer.”

If you’re getting ready to move into senior living and are wondering how to choose a floor plan that fits your needs and lifestyle, here are some points to consider:

How much space is actually necessary?
Think about how much of your current living space you use on a daily basis. You may be surprised when you realize how many of your rooms you don’t use regularly. If you’re like most people, you probably spend the majority of your time in a den or office, the TV room, the kitchen and your bedroom. While it can be nice to have a formal dining room and a spare bedroom or two, the question becomes: do you really need all that space that’s, well, taking up space? You may find that a one-bedroom apartment would be a perfect size for your space needs, especially if there are features like a den, sitting area or outdoor space as well. Take some time to think about how you use your current space and how a smaller floor plan could still fit in everything you need and love.

What sort of storage options will you require?
Having storage is necessary, no matter how big or small your space is. Depending on how efficiently the area is used, you may be able to get by in an even smaller place than you expected – as long as the storage space is adequate. If you need a lot of space, you might want a floor plan that has walk-in closets and dedicated storage space. Otherwise, a smaller apartment with a modest number of closets and cabinets may suffice for your needs.

Do you want outdoor space?
One of life’s small joys is sitting out on a porch or balcony when the weather is nice. This may not be important to you – in which case, an outdoor space might not be something you’re looking for. However, if you love to sit outside in your pajamas while drinking your morning cup of coffee, you might want an apartment or home that has options for outdoor seating. For example, at Canterbury Woods Gates Circle, we offer floor plans that have one or more terraces for those who are looking for a little of the great outdoors without having to care for a yard.

What amenities are important to you?
Is having a home office or den essential to your happiness? What about flooring? What countertops would you like? The devil is in the details, as they say, and Canterbury Woods allows you to select your in-home amenities to reflect your own style and preferences. What colors will we paint the walls? What countertops will you want? What flooring goes best? Your home will be a place where you feel at home, with your style, decor and things.

Will you be living with someone or by yourself?
A married couple will generally require more space than a single person. If you and a loved one are moving together, you may want to select a larger floor plan that gives you and your significant other private as well as communal space. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll have a whole community to live in, so you don’t need an enormous floor plan … just one that’s big enough.

What amenities does the community have?
Although you’re technically downsizing your personal space, moving into a senior living community means that you’re actually upsizing your lifestyle – by gaining everything the community has to offer. So you no longer need to have space for, say, a private home gym because you have a state-of-the-art fitness center available to you 24/7. You don’t need a kitchen equipped with the latest Viking or Jenn-Air ranges because you have a professional chef on site who will create restaurant-quality dishes three times a day. While at first glance, your space may be smaller, you’re actually gaining more space and opportunities than ever before.

“Choosing the right floor plan for your lifestyle will play an important role in your lifestyle moving forward,” says Lynda. “Canterbury Woods Gates Circle allows you to create a home in our home that provides the perfect launching site for adventure, enjoyment and fulfillment.”
