Let’s roll! Group bike rides offer fun and fitness

Sep 21, 2016

Slow Rollers meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday evenings from May to October to socialize and then hit the road at 6:30 for a 9- to 12-mile ride. A SQUAD team of volunteers leads each ride, points out highlights along the way and assists people with flat tires and other mechanical issues. SQUAD members are easy to spot in their bright orange T-shirts.

There’s no Tour de France-style competition here—just a bunch of riders who stay in tight formation for safety’s sake. The slow pace gives you a unique opportunity to enjoy and learn more about Buffalo and its neighborhoods. Most areas welcome the rides—residents often wave or shout hello as cyclists pass through their neighborhoods.

Slow Roll Buffalo has become extremely popular since the first three pilot rides were staged in 2014. In 2015, there were 25 rides during the season and three snow rolls! Attendance has ranged from 85 riders to more than 2,200!

There’s no charge to participate, but riders are asked to register on the Slow Roll Web site. Riders are asked to subscribe to a Code of Conduct—a few simple rules to keep everyone safe and encourage respect for the community.

Slow Roll originated in Detroit and has expanded into an international network of community rides.

One reasons for the popularity of these group rides is that bicycling is such a great fitness activity. Riding a bike can burn up to 500 calories an hour. It’s especially great for active older folks because it’s easy on your joints and helps develop the muscles that stabilize your hips. Older riders can choose from a variety of bike styles, from easy-to-mount step-throughs to recumbents and specialty bikes tailored to individual needs. Accessories and gear like wider seats, clip-on water bottles and lightweight helmets make riding safer and more comfortable.

We’re willing to bet that lots of the folks who have joined Canterbury Woods’ and Canterbury Woods Gates Circle’s Priority Wait lists are making bicycling part of their fitness programs. That’s the kind of people you’ll meet at these two unique retirement communities—vibrant, active, curious, smart, social and ready to roll!

Joining the Wait List is the entry point to the best retirement life in Western New York!

Canterbury Woods Gates Circle, now under construction in Buffalo, is the area’s newest continuing care retirement community. Gorgeous, elegant apartment homes, a huge roster of amenities and easy access to everything that’s great about Buffalo await those who will enjoy their retirement years here.

If you prefer a peaceful suburban setting that’s still close to shopping, dining, entertainment, sports and the arts, Canterbury Woods Williamsville may be just your style!

In both communities, you’ll enjoy fine dining, a huge roster of amenities and programs, including educational opportunities, and first-class wellness programs. Best of all, you’re free to create the retirement lifestyle you desire with no worries about your future care should your needs change.

And there’s nothing to stop you from joining the wait lists for both communities! When you do, you’ll become eligible for lovely apartment homes as they become available. The best part: You’re under no obligation to accept an apartment unless you’re ready. If you’re not, you’ll never lose your place on the list, so you can wait until the time is right for you.
